Week 8 - Article Disagreement 3

This journal has a disadvantage because it although cross cultural effects are distinguishing it is still solely based on the Japanese culture. Therefore it is only specific to a culture that is renowned for fast moving technologies. There is also the fact that younger audience are going to be more inclined and more easily influenced by technology because it is part of a younger culture. Older generations are more aware of the fact that mobile phones are ‘new’ therefore may be less disposed to be influenced by the new media.

  1. I've also found that generalisations are made from one culture to apply to the way that young people all over the world use new media, for example Finnish, Dutch and as you say here, Japanese.

Although the Internet does indeed create a global village, and all cultures are for the most part using the same technology (excluding effects of the digital divide) I don't like the assumption that in all countries, the effects of these new technologies are the same.

  2. I think as a whole new media globally affects society, yet to further your point it doesn't affect all in the same way. For example how can there be generalisations when some cultures are still deprived from new media? There also seems to be a large focus on countires that have advanced the quickest in terms of new media which ultimately adds cultural bias to such general findings.

  3. Yes, we must be wary of too much cross cultural extrapolation. There is also the possibility that in developing countries where education has been poor or non-existent that 'e-learning' of all sorts might be taken-to better by everyone than in countries where education has a long tradition of practices and expectations?

Also, when technology has not been availablr to the vast majority, then they are all digital immigrants -regardless of age?

The age digital divide proposed by Prensky, is really a western phenomenon, isn't it? (Although it includes Japan and some other far eastern countries -where the other divides may be more in evidence too and make this one (if it actually exists!) less of an issue?

    What do you guys think?

  4. It is very much a westernised view as you have pointed out in places discussed a couple of weeks back i.e. Africa/Zambia the population are digital immigrants. However, the digital divide of access to the internet will be more apparent in Africa than possibly in Western countries.
