Week 5 - Bruns C

I think there will always be produsage on the internet, not necessarily the future of the net, but it is more than a trend. Commercial forces may exploit some of the produsage on the internet, but all in all I think they will co-exist for some time. One main reason for this is the need our society has to ‘informational news.’ (Meikle, 7) There has to be an allowance for producing back out what we’ve consumed from society and produsers do this. Internet users escape within this media to find like minded people, to gain the ability to voice their opinions with things they don’t agree with and have the availability to research a world wide range of information (among many other reasons) and this in my opinion will see the existence of produsers for while.
In saying this…
However, is there such a thing as too much information?? As produsers will there come and time where they is too much production coming from users?? Will the effect of produsage become saturated?

  1. Intersting! There can always be a thing of too much information in Meatspace, but it is never really a question asked of the Internet. The Internet is a medium that is expected to have large amounts of information on it, but like you say how much is too much? I think that maybe a long time from now produsage will become saturated; not because of lack of creativity or too much information, but because people will find it too 'normal' or even boring and will seek to find greater interests like the next big new media culture!

  2. You raise a good point there! Although I have argued that produsage will exist for a long time, there is no doubt that soon something more 'new' will come along. Do you think developments will allow for users to have even more control? Or do you think developments will come from the exploitation of produsers?

  3. Isn't Facebook prettymuch nothing but produsage? And that seems to have shot to prominence in a way that makes even Google look slow?

What would reduce the popularity of Facebook do you think?

  4. Something 'newer' and 'better'. I know that to some extent facebook became the new myspace... so whenever another alternative comes along. That isn't to say that facebook will necessarily stop continuing, because my space is still going strong, but the continuation of 'newer' I think could well be the main cause of reducing facebook's popularity.
